CAPITOLA BEACH CAM
We are Sad to Announce that the Beach Cam is Retired
The Story Behind the Capitola Beach Cam
My name is Brian Childers. Five years ago, I installed the surf and beach cams on our deck at 101 Grand Ave in Capitola. The building we lived in has been up for sale for 10 years now but nobody will buy it due to the eroding cliffs and other factors. Meanwhile, rent was climbing yearly at an alarming rate. By the time we made the decision to move, the home prices in Santa Cruz were outrageous. So last year, my wife Sarah (the voice of reason) and I decided to move to St. Petersburg, FL.
I was determined to keep the cam up. It was good for Capitola and people loved it! So my neighbor Wendy at 101 Grand offered to host the cam and we found a better position on the roof. We shared the feed with local restaurants, KSBW news and the City of Capitola. It wasn't for profit. It just seemed like a cool thing to do. Unfortunately, the owner of the building wanted the cam to come down. It's his building and we have to honor his wishes. So I am sad to say that the cam is now retired. Goodbye old buddy.
